Annual Rose Sunday Marks New Academic Year

Participants in Judson College’s 91st annual Rose Sunday service Aug. 27 walked the few blocks from the college to Siloam Baptist Church, Marion.

Judson seniors began  in front of Jewett Hall by passing through a woven ivy chain crafted and held by the underclassmen. Each senior wore her academic regalia and a single red rose. Judson President David Potts then lead the procession to the church for worship.

In his address, he noted that the founders of the college wished to create a “culture of hope.”

Potts explained that this culture of hope is manifested in moral expectations, required chapel attendance, academic requirements in Old Testament and New Testament, a faculty that may pray in class without censure, beginning every academic year with a collegewide worship service and an effort to “point respectfully every student to Christ.”

“Just as the founders understood the hope of Christ, we understand today that Jesus ‘is the way, the truth and the life’ and that the touch of the Master finally and ultimately makes all the difference — the difference between hope and despair,” Potts said.
