Jon Appleton
Former pastor, state missionary dies
Jon Appleton, former pastor of First Baptist Church, Opelika, and former state missionary, died Nov. 27. He was 82.
Appleton held degrees from Samford University in Birmingham, Auburn University and Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. Prior to serving as pastor of First, Opelika, Appleton was pastor of churches in Gadsden and Kentucky. From there he served as director of campus ministry for the Alabama Baptist Executive Board (now Alabama Baptist State Board of Missions) from 1968 to 1975 and then served as pastor of First Baptist Church, Athens, Georgia, until his retirement in 1999.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Virginia, and one daughter. (TAB)
