Wayne Atcheson, a former Alabama Baptist, has been named director of the Billy Graham Library at the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association headquarters in Charlotte, N.C.
Four months ago, Atcheson left his position as admissions manager of the Jerry Jenkins Christian Writers Guild in Colorado Springs, Colo., to take on the director’s role at the Graham library. Prior to his work with Jerry Jenkins, Atcheson served as adviser of the University of Alabama’s Fellowship of Christian Athletes from 1985 until 2002. “I really feel as though my work in these two positions prepared me for my work here at the Billy Graham Library,” Atcheson said.
The library is slated to be completed in January 2007 with a grand opening planned for April. It won’t contain books, research or reference — instead it will show visitors through multimedia the story of the man, mission and ministry of Graham, Atcheson said. Ten galleries will portray the ways in which Graham impacted the world with the gospel of Christ.
“I am so humbly blessed with this position. It’s a big project here, a huge undertaking, but it’s going to be fabulous and so inspirational — very evangelistic, like a Billy Graham crusade every day.”
Atcheson said he expects several hundreds of thousands of visitors will come through the 40,000-square-foot library each year, each one hearing the gospel presentation 11 times during the tour.
“I’m still overwhelmed to have been selected and it was all God,” he said. “It is a real joy to work here with such committed Christians totally focused on winning souls to Christ [with] evangelism the all-out purpose.”
