Atheists divided months before march

AMHERST, N.Y. — Before marchers have taken their first step in an upcoming “Godless Americans March on Washington,” there has been a dispute among interested parties about who should be included.

The Council for Secular Humanism, one of almost 100 groups supporting the Nov. 2 effort sponsored by American Atheists, has called into question two groups because they are satanic.

“We recognize and in fact insist on the rights of Americans to hold and, within reason, to practice all kinds of religions,” said Ed Buckner, executive director of the council based in Amherst, N.Y. “We do not find satanism, however, to be any more credible or reasonable than more orthodox forms of religion. To worship Satan is to worship a deity and this is and should remain a march of and by those citizens who lack religion.”

The two groups cited by the council are The Order of Perdition and United Satanic Convenire, both of which have Web sites that describe themselves as satanic.
