As Erskine Vines of Atmore prayed about the amount God wanted him and his wife to give to the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering, a thought came to mind. Why not designate the proceeds from one day of business at their store, Mr. Green Jeans, to the offering?
Vines approached his wife, Gloria, with the idea and she readily agreed. The couple was already selling the store’s stock of home and garden supplies at 50 percent off in order to close the business and allow Vines to focus more on interim preaching.
So the Vineses announced to the public that on Dec. 13, 2006, all proceeds from that day’s sales would go the the Lottie Moon offering at Perdido Baptist Church in Baldwin Baptist Association, where the Vineses are members. Although some thought they were crazy, others applauded their effort and shopped at the store that day because of it, Vines said. Almost $600 was raised through the effort.
“I wanted people to know that Christmas is more than just Santa Claus … to know Whose birthday it is,” Vines said. “I think it’s great to give to something where 100 percent goes to … missions.”
