Auburn mascot creator Neel dies at 84

Charles Philip Neel, creator of Auburn University’s mascot, Aubie, and a member of Deerfoot Baptist Church, Trussville, for 32 years died July 25. He was 84.

Neel served two years in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

He was a sports cartoonist for The Birmingham Post Herald for 34 years and also was a freelance artist. 

Neel served a number of churches as a deacon, Sunday School teacher and youth worker.

He was preceded in death by one son.

He is survived by his wife of nearly 63 years, Lou; four children; 14 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
