SYDNEY — A four-year-old who identifies as transgender has begun transitioning genders for eventual gender reassignment with the help of the New South Wales Department of Education, The Christian Post reported.
The child, who hasn’t started kindergarten, is reported to be the youngest person in Australia to be in the process of transitioning genders. The school district and education department have received much criticism for supporting such a serious decision by a child that young.
The department’s Safe Schools program is funding the child’s transition, which some sources say should be complete by 2017.
Even some who are pro-LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) have expressed their concern.
Australian transgender rights advocate Catherine McGregor said, “I would have thought four is pretty young for any official policy support,” adding that checks should be in place to ensure no premature decisions are made that would affect a child for a lifetime. (TAB)
