The Alabama Baptist staff recently captured awards of excellence from two major religious press associations.
The most recent of the top honors came from Evangelical Press Association (EPA) in the newspaper category during its May 10 awards banquet.
The judges described the publication as “a stimulating variety of articles and features that contribute to the publication purposes … high level of significance through the paper … . The writing is the professional journalistic style characterized by concise sentences and short paragraphs.”
The second top award came from Religion Communicators Council (RCC) in the newspapers, local and regional, category. The staff also captured “Best of Class: Periodicals 1999” in the March 31 RCC awards ceremony.
The Baptist staff also placed second in best in class in regional newspaper in the March 30 Associated Church Press (ACP) competition.
Bob Terry, editor, and Jennifer Rash, news editor, were recognized for their anti-lottery coverage with a first-place award in the reporting category from EPA. They also were given a special recognition award for the anti-lottery series during the April 1 Baptist Communicators Association (BCA) awards competition and an honorable mention for the coverage from ACP.
Another award of excellence went to the staff from RCC for “Spanning the Globe” in the newspaper series section.
Rash earned an award of merit from RCC for her “Prayer in school” article in the newspaper single story category. Rash also captured second place at BCA in the special section, news writing division with “Insurance: Protecting your church.”
Other winners
Other Alabama Baptists were also honored by BCA:
Ken Miller, director of communications for the Alabama Baptist State Board of Missions (SBOM), took first place in the brochure or booklet section of the print media and design division with “Great Commission Ministries.”
Doug Rogers, media consultant communications associate with the SBOM, earned a first-place award in the scripts, advertising and promotional copy writing section of the feature writing division with his Alabama anti-lottery radio spots.
Rogers also took second place in the music video section of the electronic media division for “People need the Lord.” He also placed second, along with J.K. Edwards of the South Carolina Baptist Convention, in the promotional productions division with “Saddle Up.”
Scott Camp, Phil Kimrey and Sandy O’Brien of Samford University earned a second-place award in the academic catalog section of the print media and design division.
Camp, Susan Alverson and Janica York of Samford University captured second place in the direct mail advertising campaign category with a series on McWhorter (school of pharmacy) continuing education. The same team was given an honorable mention for school of pharmacy catalog in the other publications section. Both awards fell under the print media and design division.
The Missions Mosaic Team of the national Woman’s Missionary Union (WMU) won first place in the best redesigned periodical section of the print media and design division with Mosaic.
Theresa Barnett of WMU earned first place in the logo design category of the print media and design division with the “Touch Tomorrow Today” logo. Barnett also placed second in the annual report section of the print media and design division with the WMU annual report.
In the print advertisement category under the print media and design
division, Barnett took first place with “Noah’s Ark Ad/Fish Ad.” She also placed first in the special advertising materials section of the same division with her retirement invitation for Dellanna O’Brien, who retired from WMU Sept. 1, 1999.
Barnett and Dick Bodenhamer placed second in the special advertising materials category with the “Welcome to WMU” packet.
New Hope publishers, an imprint of WMU, was awarded second place for “Empowered!” in the book section of the print media and design division. (TAB)
