Robert Taylor (Bob) Baggott Jr. of Opelika, husband of The Alabama Baptist columnist and former board of directors member Betty Baggott, died unexpectedly Feb. 2 at his home. He was 68.

Baggott was a graduate of Richmond Academy in Augusta, Ga., Mercer University in Atlanta, Southwestern Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas, and received an honorary doctorate from the University of Mobile.

He began his ministerial career as associate pastor at First Baptist, West Palm Beach, Fla., later serving at First Baptist, Newnan, Ga.; First Baptist, Opelika; First Baptist, Dothan; First Baptist, Birmingham and presently at Farmville Baptist, Opelika.

As a Southern Baptist leader, Baggott served as president of the Georgia pastors conference, vice president of the Alabama Baptist State Convention and was a trustee at Mercer University, Southwestern Seminary and Midwestern Seminary, Kansas City, Mo. He was named the 1991 large church minister of the year by Samford University.

Besides serving in positions in the Southern Baptist Convention, Baggott was also involved in several professional and civic organizations.

He served as chaplain for Auburn University’s (AU) football team from 1981 to 1998.

“When I came to Auburn as head coach in 1981, I wanted our players to have the best spiritual guidance that was available,” said Pat Dye, former Auburn head football coach. “By having Dr. Baggott associated with our players, that is exactly what they received. He touched every life that came through our program as well as all the coaches and families of our players.”

The funeral was held at First Baptist Church, Opelika, Feb. 5. Burial was in Garden Hills Cemetery, Opelika.

Baggott is survived by his wife, three children and three grandchildren. (TAB)
