Bailey celebrates 20th year at Jasper’s Eastside

J.L. Bailey entered Eastside Baptist Church, Jasper, as he always does each Sunday even though it was his 20th anniversary as pastor. He was not prepared for the surprise celebration his congregation had planned for this Sunday in September.

The minister of music told Bailey he would not be preaching that morning. Instead church members showed how proud they were of him with a slide-show presentation, special music, guest speakers and gifts.

The youth and children also showed their appreciation with a drama and a choir performance. The members continued to celebrate with a reception following the service.

Bailey began preaching at the Walker Baptist Association church in 1988 after graduating from Samford University in Birmingham and New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary.

“This is home to me,” he said. “The church is very special, and I keep it close to my heart.”
