Baptist Campus Ministry (BCM) summer missions experienced a milestone when the 2,000th summer missionary was appointed April 26.
Lauren Murphey, a student at the University of South Alabama (USA), who will be serving in Ecuador, fell in line to be number 2,000 of all BCM appointees.
“I’m incredibly excited to be a part of this,” Murphey said. “God is taking us not for our abilities but for our willingness to be equipped. I’m excited about going.”
Also present at the service held at First Baptist Church, Prattville, was the 1,000th BCM summer missionary, Tami Tucker Wester, who was appointed in 1988.
Wester, a graduate of USA, served as a summer missionary in Alaska and New England. “Student missions impacted and continues to impact my life.”
The first Alabama BCM summer missionary to be appointed, Charles Martin, also planned to be present but was unable to due to health concerns. Martin, who was appointed in 1947, served in Hawaii. He later became the state BCM director.
Current director of the office of collegiate and student ministries Mike Nuss said, “For almost 60 years Alabama Baptist college students have been practicing [the Great Commission]. This is a testimony to the great Christian college force.”
