Martha Hagood, missionary emeritus of the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC), died Sept. 9. She was 89.
A native of Oxford, Hagood graduated from Albertville High School. She earned her degree from Howard College (now Samford University) in Birmingham and also graduated from the University of Alabama Medical School in Birmingham.
She served 43 years as an SBC medical missionary in Kyoto, Japan, and Eku, Nigeria. In addition, she spoke at many churches and to Woman’s Missionary Union groups about missions.
Hagood was honored as alumna of the year by Samford University in 1979.
At the time of her death, she was a member of First Baptist Church, Columbia.
Hagood is survived by one sister and many other relatives.
