Baptist men’s state softball tournament

Forty teams participated in the annual Baptist Men’s State Softball Tournament in Montgomery July 26-27.

Tommy Puckett, director of men’s ministries for the Alabama Baptist State Board of Missions (SBOM), said the two-day tournament, sponsored by the SBOM, hosted more thasn 600 players and drew 600 spectators.

“This is an activity that we thought would bring men’s groups together in an arena of common interest – sports,” Puckett said.

“It’s also a chance to help the teams to see this as an opportunity not to look at the first-place trophy as the main goal, but as an opportunity to reach unchurched men through the relationships built this summer,” he continued.

The tournament followed a round-robin format, in which the teams were divided into eight divisions of five teams each.

After the teams in each division played each other, the two with the best record played in a 16-team single-elimination championship round.

Next year’s tournament, which will take place Aug. 1 and 2, will follow the same format and will be  limited  to 40 teams.

Puckett said any church with an active men’s ministry is eligible to enter the tournament by calling his office at the SBOM, 1-800-264-1225.
