Baptist women worldwide will unite in prayer Nov. 6 during the Baptist Women’s World Day of Prayer. From nearly every country where Baptist groups exist, women will pray in more than 105 languages that God will break down barriers that hinder spreading the gospel in Latin American countries.
For the first time, Randolph Baptist Association women will participate in this event, which is sponsored annually by the Baptist World Alliance (BWA) Women’s Department.
Following this year’s theme, Seeing With New Eyes: God’s Mercy, women from the association and around Randolph County will meet at Trinity Baptist Church, Roanoke, at 6 p.m., to pray, sing and have Bible study.
As director of the Randolph Association Woman’s Missionary Union (WMU), Carole Bentley became more aware of the day of prayer while attending Alabama WMU leadership meetings.
“Candace McIntosh (Alabama WMU executive director) shared what it meant to her for women around the world meeting together at the same time offering up prayer requests, and it was special for her to know she was a part of that,” she said. “That touched me. I asked our planning committee if we would be able to support it and offer it to the association. So we are trying it this year.”
Bentley and her fellow workers began inviting women from all denominations to join them for the special day.
“We invited everyone because we want everyone to take part,” Bentley said. “That’s what it’s all about — women all around the world praying for the different needs in our respective communities and around the world.”
According to her, planning for the program was not difficult. “(BWA) offers a really good program that you can follow,” she said. “It has songs and Scripture and a Bible study. It gives you the prayer requests, and you can do them however you want — big … or small group.”
Although Bentley hopes to have a big crowd at the event, she believes the size of the group doesn’t matter as much as the purpose of the meeting.
“Prayer is so very important in our world today,” Bentley said. “It’s one of the things … each one of us can do.”
As director of missions for Randolph Association, Otis Bentley feels as strongly about prayer as wife, Carole, does.
“Our (association’s) mission statement is caring for Randolph County, our state and the world, and this is a way we can fulfill that statement,” he said. “There are a lot of needs that we have, not just within our county, that we need to pray for. (This day is about) coming together to pray for the world’s concerns.”
