Basin Baptist overflows for 75th anniversary

Many more people than the sanctuary could hold attended the 75th anniversary celebration of Basin Baptist Church, Elba, Sept. 14.

In excess of 200 people took part in the anniversary and homecoming service at this Coffee Baptist Association church that seats 120.

Because of the outpouring of support, an “overflow area” with television sets providing a live feed of the service was set up in the fellowship hall.

Pastor Danny Bynum commended the church’s historical committee for putting the service together. The committee also compiled a history book and assembled items of memorabilia. In addition, the church gave out several certificates, recognizing certain congregants for such accomplishments as being the oldest member and being a member of the church the longest.

The Johnson Trio provided music during the service, as did two young ladies in the church.

“They really blessed our hearts with song,” Bynum said.

Basin Baptist was founded during the Depression era of the early 1930s with 11 members.

Bynum was called to the church in November 2007, at a time when average attendance was between 40 and 50 members. Now, that average is more than 100.

“We have had 27 new members this year,” Bynum said. “The Lord is really blessing us. We have had to add new Sunday School classes and are looking to add on to the building.”

Basin also has a thriving youth program and many outreach efforts in the community, he said. “We reach out and help whoever needs it.” (TAB)
