Being sun smart helps fun outdoors, indoors

As the summer sun begins to heat up our Southern days, the mood to get out and enjoy the sunshine often hits. These outings also usually involve water, whether at a nearby swimming pool or at the beach.

As you enjoy these outings, remember these tips from the Web site www.fabuloustravel.com/tips/beach.html to safely play in the sun:

• Choose a sunscreen lotion that has a sun protection factor (SPF) of 15 or more. For children, use a sunscreen that has an SPF of 30 or more.

• Babies less than 6 months old should wear protective clothing, a brimmed sun hat and, if possible, baby sunglasses that protect from harmful ultraviolet rays.

• Bring along sun-protective lip balm with an SPF of 15 or more.

• Being in the sun can quickly dehydrate you. Bring along enough bottled water for everyone in your family. Check with your beach and see if coolers are allowed.

• Bring chairs made specifically for the beach. They sit low to the ground and fold up neatly, and often they include a handy shoulder strap.

• Bring along beach toys for children. Pails and shovels for playing in the sand are a must. Nerf balls and lightweight canvas Frisbee discs are great because they float and often come in neon colors so they can be seen easily.

• Bring along a plastic jar to collect shells. Only take home empty shells and fossilized starfish and rocks. If you find live snails, crabs, fish, starfish or other underwater life-forms, then observe them and put them back.

• Be sure to discuss water safety with your children before going on your trip.

• If your beach trip will continue into the evening, then bring a windbreaker or sweat jacket for everyone. Be sure that everyone has adequate footwear; swim shoes are also a good idea.

• Bring along a camera. A waterproof, disposable camera is a great way to capture all of those sunny water moments. (TAB)
