Beliefnet Web company lets several staff go

NEW YORK CITY, N.Y.— A co-founder of Beliefnet, a Web site devoted to religion and spirituality, said April 11 that his company intends to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.

“We were actually extremely close to being acquired by another company,” Steven Waldman, chairman and editor in chief of the site. “That fell through at the last minute, … so we’re doing Chapter 11.”

The Web site, at www.beliefnet.com, has received funding from five venture capital funds since it launched in January 2000.
