Christian Valley Baptist Church in Livingston saw their largest Vacation Bible School attendance in recent history this year and used it as an opportunity to help meet food needs in the community.
The July 15–17 farm-themed event at the church, located in the west Alabama community of Coatopa in Sumter County, enrolled 55 students and utilized 40 adult volunteers to help with everything from teaching to music to meals. They even had farm animals on hand to enhance the experience.
Rather than receiving a monetary offering, students and adults competed against each other to see which group could bring the most food items. More than 300 food items were donated, along with funds to purchase more food. The canned goods and other food items were donated to organizations in the area, including Livingston’s the Blessing Box food pantry, a class project of the local charter school. Donations were also taken to the University of West Alabama’s student food pantry.
As part of the collection competition, CVBC Pastor Wayne Smith had a tractor bucket-load of ice water dumped on him, “at the great joy of all the attenders and volunteers,” said his wife, Hope.
