Bill would allow monetary support of politics

WASHINGTON — The current ban on partisan political activity by churches would be eliminated under a bill now pending in the U.S. House of Representatives. Under the bill, churches could spend up to 20 percent of their budget on partisan politics without endangering their tax-exempt status.

Supporters of the bill say the current law, which prevents churches from endorsing candidates, infringes on the free speech rights of religious organizations.

The House “Worship Political Speech Protection Act,” is sponsored by Rep. Walter Jones (R-N.C.). “For me, it’s a First Amendment issue,” said Jones.
