Birmingham Baptist wins statewide hospital award

Wayne Pate, chairman of the board of trustees of Birmingham’s Baptist Health System (BHS), was recently honored by the Alabama Hospital Association (AlaHA) as the 2009 Trustee of the Year.

Pate was selected from nominations submitted by hospitals statewide because of his outstanding service as a hospital trustee and his commitment to hospitals and the patients they serve.

“As I have worked alongside Mr. Pate on our board, I have found him to be a man who not only believes in the mission of Baptist Health System but one who lives it,” said Shane Spees, BHS president and chief executive officer.

“His dedication and loyalty to our health care ministry demonstrate his values and his commitment as a true servant leader. He’s most deserving of this recognition.”

Pate, former president of Golden Flake Snack Foods and Golden Enterprises Inc., based in Birmingham, has served as a BHS board member for 25 years, holding numerous leadership positions during his tenure, including that of chairman.

In addition to his service to BHS, Pate is also active in the Birmingham community and serves as a deacon and trustee at First Baptist Church, Birmingham, in Birmingham Baptist Association.

AlaHA, based in Montgomery, is a statewide trade organization that represents more than 100 hospitals and numerous other health care providers by offering membership services designed to enhance the provision of health care in Alabama.
