A deep South tradition will come to Birmingham June 14-16 when the National Sacred Harp Singing Convention is held at Trinity United Methodist Church, which is located at 1400 Oxmoor Road in Homewood, near Birmingham.
The free, interednomininational sacred harp event is open to the public, with singing each of the three days from 9:30 a.m. till 2:30 p.m., with a noon break for lunch.
Noting that sacred harp was commonplace in the rural South up until 20 years ago, event organizer Buell Cobb said sacred harp involves community singing, with those attending invited to sing along or enjoy others as they sing.
“The harp is the voice in this case,” he said.
Songs will come from the 147 year-old “The Sacred Harp” tunebook. For more information, call 205-321-2924. (TAB)
