Birmingham to host Southeast regional gathering of New Baptist Covenant

Exactly one year after the historic New Baptist Covenant (NBC) meeting in Atlanta, Birmingham will play host to the Southeast’s NBC gathering Jan. 31, one of five planned regional meetings.

The meeting, aimed at bringing together “a celebration of Baptist churches across racial lines in order to celebrate unity in Christ,” will be held at Sixteenth Street Baptist Church, Birmingham, and the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute.
It will feature former president Jimmy Carter and Marian Wright Edelman, founder and president of the Children’s Defense Fund, as keynote speakers.

Robert Smith, professor of Christian preaching at Beeson Divinity School at Samford University in Birmingham, will also speak during the meeting, and Arthur Price, pastor of Sixteenth Street Baptist, and Gary Furr, pastor of Vestavia Hills Baptist Church, will serve as co-chairmen of the event steering committee.

Other Alabamians participating in the program include noted historian Wayne Flynt, Impact Alabama president Stephen Black, the Troy University theater department and combined choirs from area churches.
