Bloomington mayor renames 2 holidays

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — An Indiana city recently renamed two holidays in an effort to be more inclusive, and its mayor is getting some flak as a result. In the decision made in Bloomington, Good Friday was renamed “Spring Holiday” and Columbus Day was renamed “Fall Holiday,” according to The Christian Post.

“We are terrifically proud of our diverse workforce at the city,” Mayor John Hamilton announced in a memo to city employees Nov. 21, according to the Bloomington Herald-Times. “That diversity makes us stronger and more representative of the public we proudly serve. These updated names for two days of well-merited time off is another way we can demonstrate our commitment to inclusivity.”

But Hamilton has received some negative responses for that move, with people from across the country expressing their opinions on social media. Bloomington — a city of a little more than 84,000 — has long been regarded as a liberal city, according to the Post. (TAB)
