The Board of Aid awarded 204 student scholarships in the amount of $259,552 for the 2011–2012 academic year, Bill Goodwin, chairman of the Board of Aid for Students in Church-Related Vocations, reported to the state convention Nov. 13.
The board, which is comprised of Alabama Baptist pastors and lay members throughout Alabama Baptist churches, serves students at Samford University, Judson College and the University of Mobile (UMobile) and also awards scholarships to “students enrolled in the Samford University Extension Division,” according to the Book of Reports.
Ninety-nine students from the extension received $9,360 worth of scholarships while eight students from Judson received scholarships totaling $16,184 and 16 students from Samford received $50,840 in scholarship money. The largest amount of scholarships — $183,168 — went to 81 students at UMobile.
The scholarships are specifically for students entering vocational ministry.
“It makes me proud as an Alabama Baptist to see how we can do some amazing things like this when we come together as Baptists to support these young students in pursuit of their education and preparation for ministry,” said Goodwin, pastor of Lincoln Baptist Church.
“It is a pleasure for us to be able to help students prepare for the Lord’s work whether they serve here in one of our fine Alabama Baptist churches or on mission around the world,” according to the Book of Reports. “We are always mindful that the work we do is the result of the generosity of Alabama Baptists and the Cooperative Program.”
