Book Review: Health, Healing and Wholeness: Devotions of Hope in the Midst of Illness

Health, Healing and Wholeness: Devotions of Hope in the Midst of Illness by Tracy Crump. CrossLink Publishing, 2021.

If you are looking for a particularly encouraging devotional, especially if you or a loved one is enduring an illness, Tracy Crump’s “Health, Healing and Wholeness” was written just for you.

Crump is a former intensive care nurse, and her devotional is filled with stories that will give you hope and warm your heart. Crump is an experienced writer, featured in a number of Christian magazines and other devotional books. She and her family live in northern Mississippi, and she is also the co-director of Write Life Workshops.

In 30 short chapters, Crump shares about people in life-threatening situations, heartbreaking experiences and stressful circumstances. In each, she points to the way the Lord worked to bring strength, hope, peace and joy.

Miracle recoveries

Crump tells about miracle recoveries, like an 18-month-old girl who suffered head trauma in an accident and amazingly recovered despite the doctor’s grim prognosis. Crump mentions her own experience when her mother faced a sudden mental decline and how God restored her in answer to prayer and medical intervention.

In each chapter, Crump relates the faithfulness and goodness of God to those who trust Him. Many chapters recount significant healing from dire circumstances, while some note God’s mercy even when a person’s earthly life came to an end.

In these pages you will meet Vernon Presley — Elvis’ father — who was Crump’s patient at one point. You will also learn about some medical conditions you may not have heard of.

You will encounter Kate, whose unborn baby was diagnosed with Down syndrome, but who chose to let her baby live. In fact, when her daughter was born it was discovered that the diagnosis was incorrect.

This devotional was one of the most uplifting and positive books I have read in some time. If you know someone going through a medical crisis, this might make an excellent gift.
