Vona B. Elkins, Illustrated by Ruth Bochete. GO-EL Publishing, 2017. 159 pp. (Paperback).
I think just about everyone loves the story of Ruth and Naomi. Vona Elkins has taken the sweet, encouraging story of God’s plan and provision and produced what she describes as a “fictional retelling of recorded events,” filling in details not included in the biblical version from research and imagination.
The book is a delightful read, engaging the reader’s interest from the first lines, and opening the familiar story to new insights. The dialogue, which can be tricky to write (and therefore agonizing to read), is done so well that one is drawn into the conversations between the various characters as if they were in the same room.
Early on, I was captivated by the courage shown by both Ruth and Naomi, as Elkins put them in a caravan traveling to a place Ruth had never been and Naomi had left many years earlier, not knowing if they would have a roof over their heads or food to eat when they got there. The author brought out details I had never even thought of; maybe that’s why she is an author and I am a reviewer!
Elkins lives in Moulton.
