Lloyd Borden, a member of Second Baptist Church, Boaz, currently serves as director of missions (DOM) for Lookout Mountain Baptist Association. Described as humble, he has gotten churches involved with the association as well as people involved with missions.

Q: When did you become a Christian?

A: I was saved when I was 9 years old. I felt a strong need to be saved; I wasn’t afraid of going to hell, but I knew in my heart I needed to be saved.

Q: Why did you take the DOM’s position?
A: I wanted this position to broaden my level of service. Prior to my role as director of missions, I was growing into a life of service by teaching Sunday School, directing the choir, serving as chairman of the deacons and going on missions trips. I am the only director of missions in the state of Alabama that came into the position as a layman.

Q: What does your position demand?
A: We keep all the churches informed concerning activities the association is offering. We do a lot of planning and contacting for our different rallies and events. Our heart is with the churches. We try to visit with one of our churches once a week. We are very well acquainted with the pastors and the laypeople of each congregation.

Q: How have you been impacted by your work as DOM?
A: It has been a great honor and a great growing experience for me; it also has deepened my prayer life. I seek the Lord on everything we try to do. I have met a whole new realm of friends, all of whom I love dearly. Though it is a lot of work, it is a very fulfilling job. It is a great blessing to be a part of the Southern Baptist churches in Lookout Mountain Association.

Q: How do you see yourself involved in this in the future?
A: I want to provide leadership that will help our pastors grow and fulfill their ministries in the local churches. I want our churches to grow in their study of the Bible, in giving and in numbers. I want to continue being a servant to the association and do things that will relieve the burdens of the pastors so they can spend more time in prayer and Bible preparation each week.
