After an earthquake rocked Indonesia in May, members of The Church at Brook Hills, Birmingham, in Birmingham Baptist Association gave $95,000 in a special offering July 2 to build homes for those who lived in the leveled villages.
“The villages were 100 percent destroyed — every house, every family. … We have an opportunity to display the glory of Christ to the world by building some houses for some Indonesians,” Pastor David Platt challenged the congregation.
The total given grew to more than $125,000 in the next several days, allowing the church to fund the building of more than 250 temporary houses at about $400 each. A team from Brook Hills is also planning a trip to Indonesia to help with the project in the coming months. The church gave in order to help villagers “have a place to live while they restore their community,” Platt said.
