While it will “remain a faith-based organization,” changes are headed for Brookwood Baptist Health in Birmingham, Alabama. Orlando Health, Inc., announced Monday (Aug. 5) it has signed “a definitive agreement to purchase Tenet Healthcare’s majority interest in Brookwood Baptist Health.”
Brookwood Baptist Health was formed in 2015 following a merger agreement between Tenet Healthcare and Baptist Health System. This latest transaction is expected to close in the fall, and the name of the system will become Baptist Health, Orlando Health noted in its news release.
According to the release, Orlando Health — a private, not-for-profit healthcare organization — “will manage day-to-day operations of Brookwood Baptist Health in partnership with Baptist Health System.” Baptist Health System will “remain in the partnership, and it will remain a faith-based organization.”
David Strong, president and CEO Orlando Health, expressed his excitement to “further Brookwood Baptist Health’s mission of extending the healing ministry of Christ.” He noted the ongoing “need and opportunity for a private, not-for-profit healthcare system in this market.”
“We believe this is a new day in healthcare for our organizations,” he added, “and look forward to making Brookwood Baptist the best healthcare system in Alabama.”
Amy Allen, president and CEO of Baptist Health System, agreed.
“We are pleased to have Orlando Health join Brookwood Baptist Health as a majority and managing partner,” she said. “They have a proven track record in delivering high-quality healthcare services and are well positioned to invest in our community. We are excited to welcome them to Birmingham and to jointly support the faith-based mission of Brookwood Baptist Health.”
Leading efforts in Alabama
Thibaut van Marcke, senior vice president of Orlando Health Southeast Region and president of Orlando Health Dr. P. Phillips Hospital, will lead Orlando Health’s efforts in Alabama, the release said.
Brookwood Baptist Health reportedly consists of five hospitals across Central Alabama with more than 1,700 beds, more than 70 primary and specialty care clinics. They have approximately 1,500 affiliated physicians and more than 7,300 employees.
Orlando Health is a private, not-for-profit healthcare organization that currently serves the southeastern United States and Puerto Rico. Headquartered in Orlando, Florida, the system was founded more than 100 years ago.
Orlando Health is a 3,487-bed system that includes 17 hospitals, 10 free-standing emergency rooms and nine Hospital Care at Home programs. An additional four hospitals and six free-standing emergency rooms are in development.
