Ellis M. Bush, former Alabama Baptist pastor who served in different denominational ministry roles for 68 years, died Sept. 11. He was 86.
Bush, of Troy, was ordained at Southside Baptist Church, Troy, when he was 17. He graduated from Howard College (now Samford University) in Birmingham in 1951. He earned a bachelor of divinity and a master of theology from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. Samford presented him with an honorary doctor of divinity in 1972.
Bush served as pastor of Calvary Baptist Church, Troy, and as interim pastor of several churches in Alabama including First Baptist Church, Troy; First Baptist Church, Luverne; and Salem Baptist Church, Brundidge. He also served as pastor of churches in Indiana and Kentucky.
He served as editor of the Southern Baptist Convention’s then-Baptist Sunday School Board in Nashville, executive director of the Baptist Convention of Pennsylvania-South Jersey and Alabama’s State Sunday School director, among other roles.
He is survived by his wife, Juanita; four children; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
