Bush focuses on divine power at prayer breakfast

WASHINGTON, D.C. — President Bush gave his traditional remarks at the annual National Prayer Breakfast Feb. 5, joining other dignitaries in focusing on divine rather than political power.

“We’re in the capital of the most powerful nation on Earth, yet we recognize the limits of all earthly power,” the president told the crowd of several thousand at the Hilton Washington. “God serves his own purposes and does not owe us an explanation.”

Other speakers included newly appointed Washington Redskins coach Joe Gibbs, former Rep. J.C. Watts of Oklahoma and Rep. John Lewis, D-Ga. Lewis, a civil rights activist who was severely injured by Alabama state troopers in 1965, said his faith helped him survive and kept him from hating.
