Matthew Bynon is a member of New Temple Baptist Church, Dora, and an 11-year-old golf champion who has played the sport since age 7. Last June, he competed in the Mutual of Omaha Drive, Chip & Putt competition presented by the Golf Channel. After winning second place in the Birmingham division and first place in the regional division of the event, Bynon traveled to Orlando, Fla., to compete as a national finalist.

Q: How did you start playing golf?
A: I just saw people doing it, and I thought it looked cool. I tried it and just kept doing it.

Q: When did you realize that you have special talents in the sport?
A: After the first few months. I was hitting it solid and it was going straight.

Q: What does the sport demand?
A: Thinking about what I’m about to do and how I’m going to swing the club and doing it. It’s hard because if you hit a bad shot, you may get frustrated and it could mess up the rest of your game.

Q: What do you get from playing golf?
A: It makes me feel good because it’s something I’m good at.

Q: How do other family members support you?
A: They get me stuff and help me.

Q: How do you see yourself involved in this in the future?
A: Becoming a professional.

Q: What difference will playing golf make for you in the future?
A: It will help me to get a scholarship or a job and help me to become a professional.
