Christian music has seen a great influx of folk pop in the past decade thanks in part to pioneers like Caedmon’s Call. The band has forged a path over the past decade for other artists like Bebo Norman, Andrew Peterson and the Normals. The band’s latest release, “Back Home,” is very much a journey through its musical evolution from its origins in folk pop to the sound that has come to be the signature of Caedmon’s Call.

“Back Home” is one of the most well-rounded Caedmon’s Call albums to date. From the innocent “Walk With Me” to the introspective “The Emptiest Day” to the tour de force of “The Kingdom,” this album displays the earnestness and vulnerability that have become characteristic of the group’s music. The band has always approached the crafting of their songs as a group effort. The list of songwriters who contributed to this album grew to include the likes of Randall Goodgame, Sandra McCraken and Andrew Peterson. The result is a phenomenal album from one of contemporary Christian music’s most popular bands.

Caedmon’s Call will continue to explore new musical avenues in the future, but it’s refreshing to catch a glimpse of the past from time to time. It reminds us of why we first appreciated their unique blend of vocals, guitars and percussion. Most importantly, it is encouraging to hear the reminders found in songs like “Hands of the Potter” that God is capable of renewing us and bringing us back home.
