California college to study religion, public life

WASHINGTON — The University of California, Santa Barbara, has announced plans to open a center this fall that will focus on the intersection of religion and public life.

The Walter H. Capps Center for Study of Religion and Public Life will foster community dialogues, internships and academic programs led by a visiting professor. Some activities will be on the Santa Barbara campus and others at the university’s Washington, D.C., center.

Capps was a longtime professor of religious studies at the university who served briefly as a U.S. congressman before his death in 1997.

“We’re living in a time when the general public has become increasingly aware of the impact of religion in public life,” said Wade Clark Roof, chairman of the university’s religious studies department.

The center is being funded through a $500,000 appropriation from the U.S. Congress and additional donations from the university system and individuals.
