Laura Liddell of Camden was crowned Judson College’s Miss Judson March 3.
“It’s a great honor to be Miss Judson,” Liddell said. “The Bible says we are to be ambassadors for Christ, and the pageant gave me opportunity to express my Christian convictions.”
Liddell has played the piano from an early age and at the pageant, performed “Come, Thou Fount” in the setting of Peter Tchaikovsky’s “Concerto, Op. 23,” arranged by Cindy Berry.
Liddell, daughter of Van and Carol Liddell, is a member of Camden Baptist Church in Pine Barren Baptist Association, where she was baptized at age 15. “I grew up in the Presbyterian church, but the youth in our small town gravitated to the Baptist church,” she said. “I enjoyed it so much I decided to become a Baptist.”
Liddell played keyboard in the youth praise band at her church and taught a children’s Bible class on Sunday nights.
She is a graduate of Wilcox Academy in Camden, where she was chaplain for the Student Government Association and her junior and senior classes. She was also a cheerleader in ninth grade and played basketball until her junior year.
Liddell said she considered other colleges but was encouraged to visit Judson by her employer, Sulynn Creswell, at Blackbelt Treasures in Camden. Creswell was dean of students at Judson until 1999.
“Mrs. Creswell told me Judson was a good place for me,” Liddell said. “I visited the school and I prayed and I became convinced this was where God wanted me to attend college.”
Liddell is a freshman majoring in secondary education with a concentration in social science and is considering a minor in psychology.
She said her first year at Judson has been rewarding. “A special time for me was Rose Sunday in September,” she said. “One of the traditions is the freshman class weaving a chain of ivy before we go to the worship service at Siloam Baptist Church. I think we all bonded as sisters. This just confirmed I’m where God wants me to be.” (JC)
