COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — International Bible Society (IBS) is providing Bibles and New Testaments with desert camouflage covers to troops preparing for deployment, those stationed at home and troops in Iraq.
The Bibles are distributed through the IBS’ Military Chaplain Outreach program. Military chaplains receive the New International Version (NIV) Bibles and then distribute them to their service members. IBS says that approximately 64,000 books have been distributed so far. If funding is available, IBS hopes to distribute a total of 100,000 Scriptures.
“We want to get Scriptures to the troops at their U.S. bases before they leave for Iraq, so they have God’s Word with them in their pockets,” said retired Army Chaplain Chuck Adams, IBS’ military representative.
“But we can also put the Scriptures on U.S. supply planes. They’re delivered to the chaplains through the regular supply lines on the ground in Iraq. Either way, we’d like to know that every soldier who wants God’s Word has it.”
IBS first provided Bibles to American military troops during the War of 1812 and has distributed Scriptures for the U.S. military and allies in every major military conflict since, as well as during times of peace. The cost to print and ship one Bible is $2.75. People interested in helping with this project can visit www.IBSMinistry.org.
