Camp leader set for trial found dead

The former interim coordinator of St. Clair Baptist Association’s Camp Sonshine apparently committed suicide May 22, one day before his first court appearance on charges of enticing a child for immoral purposes.

Larry Ray Palmer, 59, was arrested April 12 and released April 20 on $50,000 bond, according to The (Talladega) Daily Home.

He was hired by St. Clair Association as interim camp coordinator only months before his arrest. Shortly before Palmer’s arrest, associational leadership voted to relieve him of his duties. The incident he was charged with allegedly happened at the camp and at his residence in February. After Palmer’s arrest, the association decided to cancel summer camp at Camp Sonshine, located near Pell City.

"Our hearts are saddened for the family," said Ben Chandler, director of missions for St. Clair Association. "We are regretful that this took a tragic turn." (TAB)
