During the Christmas season, food isn’t the only thing the food bank of Cane Creek Baptist Church, Warrior, provides for those in need. The Sulphur Springs Baptist Association church takes the ministry one step further through a Christmas stocking giveaway, which was held Dec. 14.
The stockings are meant to bring a bit of Christmas cheer to the children of families the food bank serves once a month.
Each stocking is filled with small toys donated by members of Cane Creek Baptist and other area churches. The stockings are included in the bags of food people pick up in the month of December so that the children’s families, rather than the church, can be the ones to give the stockings to their children.
The food bank, which is located at Cane Creek Baptist, will celebrate 10 years of serving the community in February 2014. The idea for the stocking giveaway began about five years ago, said food bank director Becky White.
She noted that many churches in Sulphur Springs Association “help tremendously,” pitching in for the stocking effort and also helping with the food bank throughout the year — either through volunteering or giving financially.
Harold Donald, pastor of Cane Creek, also acknowledged the church has “a lot of churches in the association who are making this (ministry) possible.”
Donald noted the gospel is preached at the beginning of every food distribution day and he has witnessed a number of people accept Christ as their Savior.
“When they come in to get food” they have the need for food but also the need for spiritual food, White said.
