Cannon retires after 51 years of pastoral ministry

Fifty-one years after he answered the call to preach at Catherine Baptist Church in Bethel Baptist Association, W.J. Cannon Jr. decided to end his ministry by retiring there as well. Catherine Baptist members held a retirement luncheon Oct. 8 to honor him for his service to the church and to other Baptist churches in the state.

Cannon, a graduate of Howard College (now Samford University) in Birmingham, served as pastor of numerous churches in Marengo, Clarke, Sumter, Choctaw and Wilcox counties, including Half Acre Baptist, Sweet Water; Christian Valley Baptist, Livingston; Vineland Baptist, Thomasville; New Providence Baptist, Coy; and Nanafalia Baptist. He said he gives thanks to God for allowing him to have the privilege to preach His Word and minister to many loving congregations. He added that he has “been touched by the faithfulness and support of God’s people” throughout his ministry.

Starting Nov. 1, Cannon will be available for pulpit supply. He can be contacted at 334-295-8682.
