JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. — The board of trustees at Carson-Newman College took no action against President James Netherton despite an Oct. 5 a vote of “no confidence” by the faculty.
The 129–71 vote by the faculty indicated growing and widespread dissatisfaction among faculty in the Netherton administration’s leadership. “The president is staying,” David Nowell, senior vice president for advancement and administration, told a news conference after the meeting. Whether Netherton should remain “was not addressed by the trustees,” he said. “To make a rush to judgment or a snap judgment is not good for Carson-Newman.”
Instead, the 34 trustees voted unanimously to form committees to meet with all constituents of the private Baptist college, including faculty, students and alumni, about their concerns, The Knoxville News Sentinel reported on its Web site.
Hired at Carson-Newman in 2000, Netherton worked previously as provost at Samford University in Birmingham. He followed Cordell Maddox, who had been president at Carson-Newman for 22 years.
