September 12 was a special day for Harris Chapel Baptist Church, Cherokee, as it celebrated its 75th anniversary with a crowd of more than 250. Unique parts of the anniversary celebration were the opening of a 50-year-old time capsule and the sharing of testimonies as members spoke about what the Colbert-Lauderdale Baptist Association church has meant to them.
The time capsule had been locked away within the walls of the church since September 1960. Members were able to admire the treasures from the past and add to them with a history book, pictures, testimonies and brochures created for the celebration.
“It was a very personal and special part of the anniversary celebration, “ said Donna Wallace, who organized the event.
The celebration also included a sermon preached by former Pastor Henry Trull and a plaque presented by the Alabama Baptist Historical Commission.
The day brought back so many memories for charter member Charles Thompson, but it also created hope for the future.
“My hope is that we stay together and keep praying so that this wonderful ministry will still be thriving for my grandchildren and great-grandchildren,” Thompson said.
