Cherokee’s Mountain Springs Baptist marks centenniel

In a service that honored several members, Mountain Springs Baptist Church, Cherokee, held its 100th anniversary celebration Sept. 6.

Former members came from as far as Pennsylvania for the centennial event. A history was read and a four-person ensemble performed a song about the old country church.

Among those honored were the oldest and youngest members and members who were married at the church for the longest and least amount of time. The church was decorated with mementos such as pictures and old quilts. Participants were given hand fans printed with the church’s information.

Lonette Berg, executive director of the Alabama Baptist Historical Commission, presented a plaque to the church. Anniversary committee member Lela Collum said the event had “very good attendance,” as there was standing room only. Lunch followed the service. Chris Ozment was the pastor during the celebration and Scott Penny became the interim pastor Dec. 9.
