Choir draws crowd to Walker Association church

The youth of Union Chapel Baptist Church, Cordova, in Walker Baptist Association, almost tripled attendance at the church Feb. 10 with a singing event.

The Saturday night singing featured the church’s 25 6- to 17-year-olds in an hourlong presentation to help raise money for their youth program.

"It turned out bigger than probably any of us would have dreamed," said Pastor Larry Sherer.

The church, which averages about 60 in Sunday morning attendance, hosted the choir and the 160 attendees to a dinner after the program. Sherer noted that each student was given a free ticket to give to an unchurched person, and many of them brought their parents who do not regularly attend.

Led by Greg and Tammy Gilmore, the youth use money they raise through events like this for various projects throughout the year, as well as for gifts to charities, Sherer said.
