- Contact candidates and ask them where they stand on the gambling issue. If they say, “I’m opposed to it personally, but …,” that’s code language for I’m willing to pass legislation that is favorable to the gambling enterprise.
- With incumbents, research how they’ve voted in the past. ALCAP encourages voters to use websites like Project Vote Smart (www.votesmart.org) to find this information.
- If a candidate has been involved in community leadership, look at their character — what they have done or said, who they spend their time with and what places they frequent.
- If a candidate tells you “I want to let the people vote” but he or she doesn’t explain a specific outline for the wording of what it means to let the people vote, then that’s an indicator that they are going to support gambling legislation.
