ZHUMADIAN, China — A Christian house church leader and his wife were buried alive for protesting the government-ordered demolition of their church in China’s Henan province, China Aid reported in April. Li Jiangong, the church leader, managed to escape but his wife, Ding Cuimei, suffocated to death.
Communist government authorities ordered the demolition of Beitou Church in Zhumadian, Henan province, after the couple refused to relinquish the property to a local developer, according to The Christian Post. The couple stepped in front of the bulldozing crew but were purposefully shoved into a pit and covered with soil.
Two construction crew members were detained by authorities and, according to China Aid, one of them was heard shouting, “Bury them alive for me. I will be responsible for their lives.”
China Aid President Bob Fu called the killing “a cruel, murderous act” and called on Chinese authorities to hold the crew members accountable and “take concrete measures” to protect church members’ religious freedom.
