BOSTON, Mass. — A Christian group that lost its official standing at Tufts University in April has been reinstated by the school. The university’s committee on student life voted unanimously May 15 to withdraw charges against Tufts Christian Fellowship, a chapter of InterVarsity Christian Fellowship. The group had been punished for refusing to consider a lesbian student for a leadership role.
The vote reverses an April 13 decision by the Tufts Community Union Judiciary which effectively banned Tufts Christian Fellowship from campus.
The committee on student life, which includes both faculty and students, reviewed the judiciary decision and found that the group had acted improperly in not allowing the campus ministry to defend itself against the charges, The case will go back to the student court in the fall but until then the ministry’s status is restored.
