Christian mother in Somalia divorced, forced to leave children after Bible discovered

A 32-year-old mother of two in Somalia was forced to leave her home after her husband discovered a Bible in her possession.

The woman, who secretly converted to Christianity in 2016, received the Bible during a trip to Kenya to seek medical care for her father. The woman found a Somali-language Bible at the Kijabe Mission Hospital and requested a copy to take home.

Upon returning to her home, the woman forgot to lock the drawer where the Bible was hidden. Her husband divorced her and threatened her with stoning if she came near her daughters, ages 7 and 4, again.

Somalia’s constitution establishes Islam as the state religion and prohibits the propagation of any other religion, according to the U.S. State Department. It also requires that laws comply with Islamic law principles, with no exceptions in application for non-Muslims.

Somalia is ranked 3rd on Christian support group Open Doors’ 2019 World Watch List of the 50 countries where it is most difficult to be a Christian. (MS)
