Ever wonder how to win an editor’s heart or write a successful book? Get inspiration and information on how to do just that and more from prominent Christian writers at the 17th annual Southern Christian Writers Conference (SCWC) June 20–21 at First Baptist Church, Tuscaloosa.
Whether looking to write for a Christian or secular publication, Christian writers should be "the most professional of all writers" since they are Christ’s ambassadors, according to Joanne Sloan, SCWC coordinator.
"This is a primary reason we have this conference every year — to equip people professionally to pursue their gifts and interests and to be prepared to be used by God for the work that He has specifically for them to do," she said.
Beginning and experienced writers will hear from award-winning novelists Gilbert Morris and Angela Hunt, who will serve as keynote speakers. In addition to offering advice, the conference will provide a venue to meet fellow writers and share ideas.
There will be several workshop sessions with topics ranging from Writing for Denominational Publications to Writing Drama, and from Leaving a Legacy Through Your Writing to Finding and Working With a Literary Agent.
Leaders for the workshops will include Bob Terry, president and publisher of The Alabama Baptist; Austin Boyd, author of the "Mars Hill Classified" space suspense trilogy; and Ramona Richards, freelance writer and editor.
The annual SCWC Writing Contest will be held in conjunction with the conference. Attendees are welcome to submit works such as magazine or newspaper articles, poetry or fictional short stories published between May 1, 2007, and April 30, 2008. The deadline for submissions is May 15. Winners will be announced at the conference.
