Alabama Baptists interested in chronicling the history of their churches and/or associations will want to attend a workshop on “Celebrating Church History.”
The workshop, sponsored by the Alabama Baptist Historical Commission and the Alabama Baptist Historical Society, will be Oct. 23, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. at the Samford Univeristy library.
The workshop will feature several Alabama Baptists who have experience with collecting, recording, preserving, writing and publishing church histories.
Among several leaders are Cathy Butler of Shelby Baptist Association and Jack Wright of Clarke Baptist Association, who have each recently written histories of their associations. They will describe the process they used in selecting what to use, organizing material and putting it into words.
Gary Burton, pastor of Pintlala Baptist Church, Hope Hull, will share his methods in using nontraditional sources to build the history of a church.
Other sessions during the workshop will focus on collecting and presenting oral histories using audio and videotape options, organizing and implementing church history celebration events once the history has been written and publicizing events.
For more information about the workshop or to preregister by Oct. 20 call 205-726-2749 or 205-726-4103.
