Clashes in Nigeria blamed on political unrest

LAGOS, Nigeria — Violent clashes between ethnic tribes in Nigeria during the first week of February have been blamed on politics rather than religion.

Members of the predominantly Muslim Hausas tribe battled against the Christian and animist Yorubas tribes in and around Lagos, Nigeria’s largest city. More than 100 people died during the fighting and another 400 were wounded and taken to hospitals. An attack on the village of Dagwom on Jan. 30 by 50 armed Hausa men resulted in the deaths of 20 people and the wounding of dozens more.

More than 3,000 people fled Lagos to avoid the fighting, joining thousands who left the area after a Jan. 27 arms dump explosion that killed more than 1,000.
